Italian Universities Tighten Language Certification Rules for Non-EU Students

With the academic year 2025-2026 underway, Italian universities have clarified and tightened rules requiring non-EU applicants to demonstrate Italian proficiency at level B2. At the University of Pisa, for instance, students without an accredited certificate must take the ITA L2 bravo! test through CISIA followed by a remote oral interview organized by the university’s language centre. A minimum score of 55/72 on the written ITA L2 bravo! test is required to proceed to the interview.

Certificates accepted for exemption include those given by: the Università per Stranieri di Perugia; Università per Stranieri di Siena; Roma Tre University; Società Dante Alighieri; and affiliated accredited institutions. These certifications must be obtained from bodies recognized under the CLIQ (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità) scheme. Failure to meet these requirements means applicants cannot be admitted to degree programmes taught in Italian until they’ve completed the necessary testing and demonstrated competence.
