Beginning in September 2026, Italian-language schools in South Tyrol will adopt a landmark curriculum reform that embeds artificial intelligence (AI) education across all grade levels, including both online and on-campus learning formats. The initiative is part of a broader strategy named “La Scuola che vogliamo – Un mondo che cresce con noi,” or “The school we want – A world that grows with us,” aimed at fostering digital literacy, ethical technology use, and responsible citizenship.
Under Project Athena, teacher training will include modules on AI fundamentals, privacy protection, and legal compliance. The curriculum will require students not simply to use digital tools, but to develop an understanding of how AI works and how to evaluate its impacts. The reform also places special emphasis on inclusion, ensuring that digital tools support students with disabilities.
For online courses, platforms will be updated to integrate AI-driven educational tools that complement in-person classroom experiences. Such tools might include adaptive learning software, AI-facilitated feedback on assignments, and digital collaboration tools. The goal: a seamless hybrid curriculum that prepares students to thrive in both virtual and real-world settings.
The South Tyrol reform is seen as pioneering within Italy, raising expectations for broader national adoption. With careful implementation and teacher support, this curriculum may set the standard for future online and on-campus Italian language education programs.
